On December 7, 2016 our community lost a brilliant teacher and loved family member. Stephanie Ann Ressa was 48. Stephanie was born in Spokane in 1968 - the first child of Gene Ressa and Jackie Logan. It wasn't long before it was obvious the kind of spirit Stephanie possessed. She was a talented public speaker and won many state awards. She was a gifted runner helping the Riverside High School Track and Cross Country teams win countless ribbons. As the Riverside Junior Miss Alternate, she won the hearts of many with her incredible smile, intelligence and kindness.
Stephanie was the General Manager of the downtown Onion restaurant in Spokane for many years. Employees remember her as a boss that was thoughtful of family and kind to everyone. Customers sought her company when they came in for dinner. People loved being around her because she was adorably positive. While working full-time and caring for two beautiful daughters, she received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Whitworth University to pursue her dream of teaching. For almost 15 years, our community and the students of the Mead School District have benefitted from her passion for connecting children to their school and instilling the love of learning. She worked tirelessly with parents, students and staff to ensure 'her' kids got what they needed at school. Her energy will be sorely missed. Stephanie could whip up a fantastic meal with ease and sewed complicated quilts and clothes without assistance. Stephanie found sanctuary at the home she shared with Scott on the Little Spokane River and the little cabin on Sacheen Lake. She appreciated the days of no stress, no phone, and plenty of sunshine. Scott, who used to work morning until night, says she made him a more balanced person. She loved teaching and becoming a grandmother. Stephanie was preceded in death by her grandparents, Fannie and Bert Ressa and Carol Reasoner Kincaid, her great-aunt Arlene Reasoner George, her dear friend Lisa Gylenhammer, and her chosen father-in-law Gabe Daratha. Stephanie is survived by her loving partner, Scott Daratha, her daughters Hannah Flaherty and Haedyn Flaherty, her granddaughter, Kinsley Boyd, her mother, Jackie Edwards, her father and step-mother, Gene and Jan Ressa, her siblings Michelle Ressa, Lisa Ressa, Seth Stern and Vaughn Stern, her brother-in-law Tony Rugel, and son-in-law Michael Boyd. Memorial services are as follows: Rosary on Thursday, December 15, 2016 at 7 p.m. at Hennessey Funeral Home with the Funeral mass on Friday, December 16, 2016 at 4:30 p.m. at St. Aloysius Church. A reception will follow in the Globe Room of Cataldo Hall across from the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made in Stephanie's name to the Spokane Humane Society or SCRAPS. Stephanie loved her rescue dog and believed she added so much joy to her life. A donation box will be available at the reception. On-line condolences may be posted at www.hennesseyfuneralhomes.com.
