Lois was the daughter of the late Lucy Augusta Stengar and Gus Stengar, Coeur d' Alene tribal members. Her Grandma Christine "Ma" Campbell also played a role in her life, along with her late sister Ramona Stengar. Lois was born in Spokane, Washington, attended Our Lady of Lourdes Grade School, she received a scholarship to the Holy Names Academy, graduating in 1945. After High School, Lois began her 35 year career with the JC Penney Company. This was in addition to raising her family. She married Doug Peterson, and they had a daughter, Barbara Doyle, of Seattle. Later, she married Alan James. They had four children, Michael, Portland, OR, Diana, Santa Cruz, CA, Roberta, of Lake Oswego, OR, and Tracy Callen (Corbin), of Seattle, WA. All of her Children are Cd' A tribal members. Lois lived in Spokane, WA, England and California, however, she eventually settled in Seattle with her five children. Lois spent most of her time with her large family. She enjoyed being with everyone at family gatherings, birthdays and holidays. She loved shopping, and dining out with her children and grandchildren. She was generous and caring, pitching in to help her children and grandchildren with whatever was needed. She had a great sense of humor, and loved her family very much. She also had a matter of fact, practical side that her family relied on, and loved about her. Lois loved sports. She was active in her youth playing basketball, and along with her sister and Cousin Delores Morris, she played softball for several years. Her team, Western Pine, was coached by her father Gus. She was a good athlete and lettered in high school. She followed the Mariners, Sonics, Seahawks, Sounders, and Tennis. She read the sports page and enjoyed talking with friends and family about players, trades and statistics. She enjoyed many of her grandchildren's activities over the years, including various sporting competitions and school graduations. She loved to travel, more often than not she took family members with her. Lois went on many memorable family excursions to her favorite destinations including Reno, Tahoe, Vegas, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and St. Thomas. She also went with family on several trips to Disneyland. She often visited family in Oregon, California, and Texas, as well as extended family in Idaho. Lois had 12 grandchildren: Robin, Erika, Robert, Sarah, Chris, Brooke, David, Ashley, Whitney, Lacey, Claire and Cierra, as well as 20 great grandchildren. Lois was very much loved and cherished by her family. She will be greatly missed and is forever in our hearts. Visitation will be held Friday, January 13, 1-6pm, at Hennessey Funeral Home, 2203 N Division St, Spokane, with a Rosary service to follow at 6pm. Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, January 14, 3pm, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, on the campus of Gonzaga University. Interment will be held Tuesday, January 17, 10am, at Holy Cross Cemetery.
