BECK, Lawrence Delmar "Larry"
March 6, 1922 - December 8, 2016
Lawrence Beck passed away on Dec 8 following complications from hip surgery. He was born March 6, 1922 in Yakima Wa. He was the oldest of 5 children born to John and Dora Beck. He was the great grandson of an early Yakima pioneer who traveled west in 1865 at the end of the civil war to homestead what is now the west side of Yakima and became the first justice of Yakima county. His family could trace their roots in this country all the way back through the civil war and the revolutionary war to the Mayflower.
Larry enlisted in the US Army in July of 1940. Early in WW2, he was ordered to Officer Candidate School where he received a commission as a Second Lieutenant of Air Defense Artillery. He later in the war volunteered for Parachute School and transfer to the Airborne Infantry. He served in combat with the 503rd Parachute Regiment Combat Team as a Rifle Platoon Leader for the liberation of the Philippines. He landed with the 11th Airborne Division in Japan as part of the occupation force and served there until returning to the United States in 1946.
After the war he returned to Seattle where he completed a degree in Economics and Business at the University of Washington.
The military recalled him to active duty with the advent of the Korean War. He served as mortar platoon commander in 1951 and 1952 in Korea with the 2nd Infantry division. He was released from active duty in 1952 and honorably discharged from the army reserve as a Captain in 1955.
Larry worked in business for many years at General Electric Credit Corporation in Seattle and at the Old National Bank in Spokane where he was a Vice President at its headquarters. He led the team at Old National that launched the Bankamericard (later Visa) credit card program in the state of Washington and he managed the Dealer Loan Center for several years at the bank.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Sons of the American Revolution, and the Knights of Columbus (4th degree). He was a charter member of the South Hill Senior Center and he has been a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church for 47 years.
He also served Gonzaga University as a participant in their Great Teachers program for 18 years.
Larry is preceded in Death by his parents and his 4 siblings; John Alden Beck, Colonel Grace Elaine Munzer, Stanley Warren Beck, and Norma Beck Clark.
Larry Beck and Mary Egan Becker were married on Aug 21, 1954 and together they had 4 children.
Larry is survived by his wife of 62 years; Mary, his 4 children; Melia Langdon of Spokane, Leesa (John) Morse of Seattle WA, Lieutenant Colonial, US Army (retired) Lawrence J (Celena) Beck of Anchorage AK, and Joan Beck of St Louis, MO. There are 4 grandchildren; Valerie (Carl) Gunther and Nicole Beck of Anchorage AK, Sullivan Morse and Margaret Morse of Seattle WA and 2 great grandchildren; Veida Gunther and Ira Gunther of Anchorage AK.
Vigil service and rosary prayer will be Thursday, Dec 15 at 7.00 PM at Our Lady of Fatima church. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, Dec 16 at 11.00 AM at Our Lady of Fatima church. Interment to follow at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake.
