Lawrence Cary Smith passed away December 18, 2016, after losing a battle with leukemia.
Born 8/27/1932 in Spokane to Del Cary Smith and Anastasia Raftis Smith, Larry was the youngest of three brothers. He grew up attending Wilson Elementary, St. Augustine Catholic School and Gonzaga Prep. He attended the University of Washington, and was a member of Alpha Delta Phi fraternity. He went on to receive his law degree from Gonzaga Law School in 1959.

Larry enjoyed playing football in grade school and high school. He also began golfing at age 6, and would often golf with his older brother Del. He loved bird hunting and fishing, and always had a great affinity for animals.

During the 1960s and early 70s, Larry, his father and brother Del, formed the law firm Smith, Smith & Smith located in the Spokane & Eastern Building. Larry practiced law, but his hobbies were his passion. He was a skilled carpenter, who gave freely of his talent. He loved hunting upland game, and working with and training his bird dogs. He was active in advocating for the preservation of upland game habitat. As an avid fisherman, he advocated for salmon and steelhead habitat, representing the Assoc. of NW Steelheaders in a lawsuit against the Army Corp of Engineers.

Larry also loved music, and had great fun as a member of The Spokane County Bar Players, a talented mix of law professionals who spoofed Broadway musicals making fun of the legal profession and local issues of the day.

During the 1990s, Larry served as president of the Spokane Athletic Round Table, the nonprofit club founded by Joe Albi in 1920. Millions of dollars have flowed into Spokane sports, events and scholarships through this organization.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Del and Anastasia, brothers Judge Del Cary Smith, Jr., and Dr. Edward Cary Smith. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Smith; children Camie Smith Wereley, Robyn Smith (Todd), Whitney Smith (Kirsten) and Jeanne Smith; step-children Nina LaFleur, Peter LaFleur (Julie) and Jason LaFleur (Chrissy); grandchildren Sarah Daniel Smith (Chris), Mary Daniel, Andrew Daniel, Hayden Walker (Sierra), Forrest Walker, Colin Wereley, Alex LaFleur, Noelle LaFleur, Clyde LaFleur; and great-grandchild Clay Walker.
